Steve Barclay Proposes Ban on Trans Patients in Single-Sex NHS Wards

Health Secretary Steve Barclay has rocked the NHS with plans to ban transgender patients from single-sex hospital wards. Speaking at the Conservative party conference, Barclay promised a consultation aimed at boosting protections for women and restoring what he calls “common sense” to the health service.

New Rules Could Separate Trans Patients in NHS Wards

Currently, NHS guidance allows trans patients to be placed on wards matching their gender identity. The proposed crackdown would instead assign separate rooms or areas for trans individuals – a move already sparking concern among doctors over whether hospitals have the facilities to make this work.

Legal Backing and Controversy

Doctors question if this move complies with the Equality Act, which permits excluding trans people from single-sex spaces only for legitimate reasons like privacy and safety. Barclay insists the plan respects the “dignity, safety, and privacy” of all patients while protecting women’s rights.

He also revealed a return to sex-specific language on NHS websites covering cervical and ovarian cancer, plus menopause advice.

Mixed Reactions: Charity vs. Campaigners

Cleo Madeleine from trans-led charity Gendered Intelligence slammed the plans as damaging, warning they could scare trans patients off vital NHS care. Meanwhile, Maya Forstater of campaign group Sex Matters cheered the announcement as “fantastic news,” taking aim at “transactivist” influence in healthcare.

Dr Vishal Sharma of the British Medical Association added a practical warning. He said many hospitals struggle with limited single rooms, often reserved for infection control, questioning how feasible the proposed changes really are.
