Newsreader Nicholas Owen Blasts Historic New Year’s Day Horn in Brighton
Brighton kicked off its New Year’s Day with a bang as TV newsreader Nicholas Owen blew the ceremonial whistle at the iconic Volk’s Electric Railway. The event marked a landmark moment—the 200th anniversary of railways—with a nationwide “horn salute” echoing across UK heritage lines.
World’s Oldest Electric Railway Joins Nationwide Tribute
At noon, Volk’s Electric Railway, famed as the world’s oldest operating electric railway, joined the synchronized salute, sending its horns ringing along Brighton’s scenic seafront. Brighton & Hove City Council hailed the event as a heartfelt nod to the golden age of steam railways.
Stormy Weather Fails to Dampen Spirit
Despite the railway’s temporary closure from 12pm, hardy fans braved the storm on Madeira Drive to celebrate the railway’s incredible legacy. Volk’s, which turned 140 in 2023 and scooped the prestigious Railway of the Year award in 2024, is set to reopen at 1pm, ready to chug into another historic year.
