Big Shake-Up: Nurses and Therapists Can Now Issue Fit Notes!
From July 1, 2022, fit notes — the official proof you’re off sick — won’t be the sole domain of doctors anymore. Nurses, occupational therapists, pharmacists, and physiotherapists will join the ranks, legally authorised to certify your sick leave. This game-changing move aims to speed up the process and relieve pressure on overstretched GPs.
Why This Matters: Faster Support, Less Fuss
Fit notes provide crucial evidence for employers if you’re off work for more than seven days. Until now, only doctors could issue them. This shift means you’ll see the healthcare pro best suited to your condition, sparking better conversations about your health and work.
The change is hailed as the biggest upgrade since fit notes were introduced in 2010, set to boost workplace health dialogue and slash red tape. The new system rolls out in GP surgeries and hospitals, easing doctors’ workloads and speeding up paperwork for NHS and employers alike.
Govt & Health Chiefs Praise the Reform
Chloe Smith, Minister for Disabled People, Health and Work: “This is fantastic news for patients. It makes support easier and ensures advice comes from the right person, helping more people stay in work.”
Maria Caulfield, Minister for Patient Safety and Primary Care: “Reducing red tape and expanding fit note powers is vital as we tackle the Covid backlog. This will help free up GPs to focus on patients who need them most.”
Dr Kieran Sharrock, deputy chair of the BMA GP committee: “A positive step that eases pressure on GPs and gives patients quicker, appropriate support.”
Physios and Occupational Therapists: The New Frontline
Middleton, Chief Exec of The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy: “Physiotherapists are experts in health conversations. Early intervention by physios means quicker rehab and faster return to work. No need for extra GP appointments is a real win for patients.”
Karin Orman, Director at The Royal College of Occupational Therapists: “We’re proud to back this bold step. Workers and employers need more help to keep people working. Now Occupational Therapists can give direct advice, making a real difference.”
This reform follows April’s rollout of digital fit notes, simplifying the whole process. It’s part of the government’s wider push to reduce job losses linked to illness and ease the NHS crisis.
