UK Reports 19 New Cases in Deadly E. coli O145 Outbreak
The Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O145 outbreak continues to spread in the UK, with 19 new cases reported this week. The total now stands at 275 confirmed infections. All new cases had symptom onset before June 4, raising fresh concerns about ongoing transmission.
Where Are The Cases Hitting Hardest?
- England: Leading the pack with 182 cases.
- Scotland: 58 cases confirmed.
- Wales: 31 cases reported.
- Northern Ireland: 4 cases, mostly linked to infections acquired in England.
Hospital Admissions and Fatalities
Out of 249 cases reviewed, nearly half—49%—have required hospitalisation, putting pressure on the health system. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed two deaths in England linked to the outbreak strain. Both victims had pre-existing health issues and passed away in May. Experts believe at least one death was directly caused by the infection.
Outbreak Still Unfolding
Although new case reports are slowing, experts warn more infections are expected. Ongoing testing and genome sequencing of samples from NHS labs will reveal further developments. Health officials urge vigilance as they track this serious public health threat.
