Operation Brock Back on the M20 as UK Eases COVID Rules

Kent’s iconic Operation Brock contraflow is back just in time for Monday’s big COVID rule changes. From July 19, fully vaccinated travellers returning from amber list countries won’t need to self-isolate. But with holiday traffic set to surge, Kent Resilience Forum (KRF) bosses have reinstated the concrete barrier on the M20 to keep things moving.

Concrete Barrier Deployed to Tackle Summer Traffic Chaos

The giant moveable barrier, covering 16 miles between Junctions 8 and 9, will create a contraflow system to ease congestion. It’s a quick-deploy safety measure to handle the expected wave of tourist traffic and freight trucks heading to Dover and Eurotunnel.

HGVs will now have to stick to signed routes, and speed limits will apply both ways. The barrier, stored on the hard shoulder since April, was shifted into place overnight at the weekend to minimise disruption.

Officials Warn: Expect Delays, Plan Ahead

Simon Jones, KCC’s Highways Director and KRF Strategic Lead, said: “Passport and COVID checks have slowed border processing, so we’ve acted early to keep Kent moving and protect local communities. With school holidays starting, we want travellers and hauliers to get where they’re going safely and swiftly.”

Jones urged drivers to prepare for longer journey times and stay updated on traffic news. “We’ll keep monitoring closely and aim to remove the barrier as soon as possible. Thanks to all for your patience.”

Government Officials Brace for Border Delays

Transport Minister Rachel Maclean warned: “International travel has changed this year. We expect heavy traffic through Kent this summer. Operation Brock will help keep essential freight moving, but non-essential travellers could face long waits.”

Highways England Regional Director Nicola Bell added: “More travel means more cars and lorries on the M20. We don’t expect everyone to welcome the barrier, but it’s vital preparation. We’ll keep reviewing the situation and remove it once traffic eases.”

Keep an eye on Kent’s roads and plan your journey carefully this summer.
