Operation Brock Barrier Coming Down as Kent Traffic Threats Ease

The Operation Brock contraflow on the M20 is being removed this weekend, say Kent Resilience Forum (KRF) chiefs, as the risk of gridlock drops now summer holidays have kicked off.

Barrier Removal Based on Traffic Data

The decision follows updated passenger booking forecasts and faster border checks at Channel crossings. The M20 barrier will be dismantled but kept on standby ready to be redeployed at short notice if traffic disruption flares up again.

Simon Jones, KCC’s Highways Director and KRF Strategic Lead, said: “After a problem-free week, the barrier is coming down. It’s being stored on the hard shoulder, ready to go if needed again.”

“Every time we introduce such measures, it’s for a solid reason. We’ll always remove them as soon as possible to keep Kent moving smoothly, protect residents and businesses, and help travellers reach their destinations safely.”

Officials Ready to React if Disruption Returns

Nicola Bell, Regional Director for Highways England, added: “Deploying the barrier was the right call to prepare for possible disruption. Its flexibility means we can quickly remove or redeploy it depending on Channel port conditions.”

“Thanks to everyone for their patience. We look forward to restoring full M20 capacity.”

Travellers Urged to Prepare for Delays

Despite the barrier coming down, KRF partners including Highways England and Kent County Council warn drivers to stay ready for potential delays.

  • Check your route beforehand using Kent County Council’s Travel & Transport page for live updates.
  • Allow extra time – jams can strike unexpectedly anywhere.
  • Pack essentials – food, water, medication, nappies if travelling with children.
  • Check your vehicle – tyres, lights, fuel, oil, and water to avoid breakdowns.

Channel-bound passengers via Dover or Eurotunnel should ensure their passports have at least six months validity and check any current COVID entry rules to avoid being turned away at the border. For full travel guidance visit GOV.UK.
