Operation Stack Activated on M20 as Calais Strikes Cause Chaos
Operation Stack is now blocking the coastbound M20 between Junctions 8 and 9. This emergency measure is in place due to ongoing industrial action in Calais, disrupting freight traffic heading to the continent.
What is Operation Stack?
Operation Stack turns sections of the M20 into a giant lorry car park. It queues freight traffic heading to ports and the Channel Tunnel to prevent gridlock across Kent’s roads. This drastic step is only taken after careful consultation and safety assessments.
How Does Operation Stack Work?
- Lorries queue in two lanes: one for port traffic, one for tunnel traffic, using the hard shoulder and lane 3.
- A clear middle lane stays open for emergencies like breakdowns or medical calls.
- Freight moves in stages as port capacity frees up, so you might see motorway stretches suddenly clear.
- Non-freight vehicles get diverted onto the A20 at the first affected junction, rejoining the M20 ahead of the lorry queues.
Why Are More Motorway Sections Affected Early On?
When Operation Stack starts, long freight queues build fast, especially where traffic merges from the port and Channel Tunnel. To manage safety, some slip roads to the port and tunnel may close temporarily.
