UK Government Flies in Over 21 Million PPE Pieces from China
The UK has pulled off a major lifeline for the NHS, flying in over 21 million pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE) and more than 1,000 ventilators from China in just three weeks.
20 Special Flights Shuttle Vital Gear to UK Hospitals
Between April 2nd and 25th, the Government chartered 20 medical flights back from China, carrying crucial supplies purchased and generously donated by Chinese firms. This rapid response was a direct result of strong UK-China trade ties, with Chinese companies reciprocating donations initially made by UK firms earlier this year.
The British Embassy in Beijing played a key role, teaming up with the Department of Health to source and deliver life-saving equipment across NHS hospitals and care homes nationwide.
Dame Barbara Woodward, British Ambassador to China, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to deliver huge quantities of lifesaving equipment for the NHS and our social care services. Our strong trade relationship with our Chinese partners has meant we have sourced the right equipment, with both UK and Chinese firms uniting in the fight against Covid-19. We are working round the clock to bolster NHS supplies and save lives, seeking further urgent deliveries.”
Airlines Step Up, Special Permissions Granted
British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and various cargo specialists operated the 20 flights. Thanks to special permission from China’s Civil Aviation Authority, passenger airlines converted their routes to cargo missions, speeding critical deliveries.
The British Embassy’s multi-department team – covering Trade, Foreign Office, Visas, Immigration, and Ministry of Defence – masterminded coordination, procurement, and logistics to get supplies where they were needed most.
Grateful NHS and Charities Receive Vital Supplies
Leading hospitals and charities have begun receiving these supplies. Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital and Age UK are among the beneficiaries.
David Lawson, Chief Procurement Officer at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are very grateful for donations from the British Chinese Community and the support of the British Embassy in Beijing, both of which have helped ensure a steady and timely supply of PPE and vital medical equipment to support the NHS response to COVID-19.”
Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director of Age UK, said: “We appreciate the kind support and donations from the people of Changsha. The masks will protect our local Age UK teams who support vulnerable older people, helping those recovering from the virus safely return home.”
Generous Donors Including Bank of China Lead the Way
Nearly 2.5 million PPE items have been donated by Chinese organisations, including the British Chinese Community and the Zhejiang UK Association. The biggest donor to date is Bank of China, which has contributed over 1.8 million PPE pieces and 20 ventilators.
Notably, UK firms such as AstraZeneca and GSK sent protective gear to Wuhan early in the pandemic, including goggles and gloves — demonstrating global support in both directions.
