The leaked paper, marked “Post Office Ltd Senior Management Risk and Assurance Committee” and stamped “restricted,” flagged concerns over Vennells’ “people management” skills and a “lack of knowledge.” Insiders agreed she wasn’t the right fit to head Post Office Ltd (POL), though the evidence was mostly anecdotal.
One major issue was her strained relationships with key figures, including Jo Swinson, former Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. Vennells’ management style reportedly clashed with different personalities, making cooperation tricky.
Continued Role Despite Warning Signs
Despite these red flags, Vennells stayed in charge until 2019. In a twist, she bagged a CBE in December 2018 for her dedication to customer service. The document notes that keeping her on but reviewing her role risked political fallout, which complicated matters.
It also warned that firing her without a clear successor could cause mayhem, as quickly finding a replacement was a challenge.
