Six-Vehicle Smash Closes M27 Between Junctions 11 and 12
Hampshire Roads Policing shut down a busy stretch of the M27 eastbound tonight following a serious six-vehicle collision. The crash, which happened just after 8.30pm, caused chaos between junctions 11 and 12, forcing authorities to close the motorway and set up a diversion.
M27 Eastbound Chaos: Police Close Junction 11 Slip Road
Alongside the motorway shutdown, the M27 eastbound entry slip at junction 11 was also closed by police and Highways England traffic officers. Reports say the crash began with a single-vehicle collision before multiple others became involved, piling on the misery for motorists.
Emergency Crews Rush to Scene – Nine Injured
Firefighters from Fareham and Cosham stations raced to the scene, working alongside South Central ambulance paramedics. Nine people received medical treatment, with crews using cutting gear to free two individuals and a dog trapped in the wreckage. It’s not yet clear how serious their injuries are.
Massive Diversion in Place – Drivers Urged to Avoid Area
Highways England issued a detailed diversion:
- Exit M27 at junction 11.
- Take the 3rd exit off the roundabout onto the A27.
- At the next roundabout, take the 1st exit onto the A27 eastbound (Porchester Road).
- Continue on the A27 to the M27 roundabout and take the 2nd exit to rejoin the M27 eastbound.
Authorities warned drivers to allow extra journey time or seek alternative routes due to heavy traffic snarls caused by the crash. A Hampshire Police spokesman said: “The eastbound carriageway is closed due to a six-vehicle collision. We advise motorists to avoid the area while emergency teams work to clear the scene.”
A Hampshire Fire and Rescue spokeswoman added: “Nine people were injured. Crews freed two people and a dog from the damage. We are still assessing the severity of injuries.”
UPDATE 10.30pm: Police recovery teams have cleared the crash site and reopened all lanes on the M27. Traffic flow is returning to normal.
