Man in Critical Condition After Chelsea Bridge Drama
The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards is probing a shocking incident that left a man fighting for life after being pulled from the Thames.
Armed Man Causes Chaos on Chelsea Bridge
Police rushed to Chelsea Bridge Road, SW1, around 9am on Saturday, June 4, responding to reports of a disturbance. Witnesses said a man, armed with a screwdriver, was shouting aggressively on the bridge.
Officers arrived quickly and confronted the man, believed to be in his 40s. They deployed a Taser, but it failed to subdue him. The suspect then plunged into the river.
RNLI Rescue and Hospitalisation
An immediate search and rescue operation was launched. The RNLI pulled the man from the water and he was rushed to hospital, where his condition is critical.
Police are currently contacting his family, offering specialist support.
Investigation Underway
The Met’s professional standards team is investigating the full circumstances of the incident. A referral has also been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
Detective Chief Inspector Rory Wilkinson said: “My thoughts are with this man, who is extremely unwell in hospital. Officers are making every effort to make contact with his family.
“There are always concerns when someone comes to harm after contact with police. All Met officers know they are accountable, and a full investigation is underway to uncover exactly what happened.”
