Putin Sets Tough Terms for Ukraine Peace Talks
Russian President Vladimir Putin has slammed down strict conditions for peace talks with Ukraine. Speaking to Russia’s foreign ministry, Putin said Moscow is ready to start negotiations “tomorrow” — but only if Ukrainian troops pull out of Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Donetsk, and Luhansk, and Kyiv scraps its NATO membership bid.
“Simple” Conditions, Says Putin
“Conditions are very simple,” Putin declared. “As soon as Kyiv says they’re ready for such a decision and start the real withdrawal of forces from these regions and officially declare rejection of plans to join NATO, from our side, immediately, literally the same minute, will come an order to stop the fire and start negotiations. We will do it immediately. Obviously, we will guarantee the uninterrupted and safe withdrawal of Ukrainian forces.”
Stalemate Deepens Amid Fierce Hostilities
Putin’s demands come as fighting rages on, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy vowing never to surrender occupied lands. Zelenskyy insists Russian troops must leave entirely before any peace deal is even considered — putting the chances of talks on a razor’s edge.
Putin Blasts West Over Arms Deals and Global Tensions
Beyond Ukraine, Putin took aim at the West, accusing Western nations – especially the US – of “selfishness and hypocrisy.” He warned the globe is dangerously close to a breaking point, blaming Western withdrawals from vital arms control agreements for escalating the crisis.
“The selfishness and arrogance of Western states has led to the current extremely dangerous state of affairs,” Putin said. “We have come unacceptably close to the point of no return. Calls to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia, which has the largest arsenal of nuclear weapons, demonstrate the extreme adventurism of Western politicians.”
Putin also slammed the West for seizing Russian assets and pulling out of Cold War-era treaties like the 2019 US exit from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) and Russia’s halt in 2023 on the New START nuclear arms pact.
Peace Talks Hang in the Balance
With both sides locked in hardline stances, the path to peace remains murky. Putin’s demands and Zelenskyy’s refusal signal a tense deadlock that could prolong the conflict — keeping Europe on edge as the world watches.
