Summer Rail Strikes Set to Ruin Family Holidays Across England and Wales
As schools break up for summer, rail strikes are gearing up to throw a massive spanner in the works for holidaymakers across England and Wales. Members of two major rail unions have called industrial action, snarling services and causing widespread chaos for families planning trips during the six-week holiday period.
Strike Dates and Impact – Major Rail Operators Hit
The strikes are booked for Saturday 22 July and Saturday 29 July, with the RMT union leading the walkouts. Fourteen train companies will be hit, including heavyweights like Avanti West Coast, Great Western Railway, Southeastern, and Northern Trains. Around 20,000 RMT members — including guards, train managers and station staff — will be on strike.
Previous strikes have seen thousands of train cancellations, some routes shut down entirely, and remaining services running late and finishing early. National Rail warns passengers to expect few or no services on affected lines. The message is clear: check before you travel or risk major disruption.
American Airlines Pumps $1bn into Pilot Pay Battle
Across the pond, American Airlines has upped its contract offer to pilots by over $1 billion. This move matches a sweeter deal at United Airlines, with a $9 billion contract on the table. The proposal includes pay parity, retroactive pay, extended sick leave, and improved life insurance. The airline’s pilots will vote on this deal this Monday.
But the Allied Pilots Association (APA) isn’t fully sold, raising concerns about pay gaps and benefit differences compared to United’s pilots.
CME Group Cuts Jobs, Shifts Focus to Cloud Tech
Meanwhile, CME Group – the world’s largest derivatives exchange – has axed 100 jobs, 3% of its workforce. The firm is reallocating most roles towards cloud-based tech, keeping overall staff numbers steady. The move follows financial fallout from the recent regional US bank collapses, signalling tough cost-cutting in the industry.
Travel and Industry Brace for Ongoing Disruption
With rail strikes looming and labour unrest spilling across sectors, families and commuters must prepare for disrupted travel plans. Industry giants continue to wrestle with economic uncertainty as workers push back on pay and conditions. It’s shaping up to be a tricky summer on the rails and beyond.
