Great Ormond Street Horror: Kids Left in Pain After Shoddy Surgery
Young patients at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) were left with ongoing pain and nerve damage after botched and possibly unnecessary limb surgeries. The culprit? Former consultant orthopaedic surgeon Yaser Jabbar. Some victims were babies just four months old.
Royal College Slams Jabbar’s “Unacceptable” Care
A lawyer for affected families revealed a damning Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) review. It branded Jabbar’s treatment “unacceptable” and responsible for “serious harm” in multiple cases. One child even needed a leg amputation after surgery. Others suffer leg length differences and lasting nerve damage, facing further surgeries and endless medical battles.
GOSH Issues Apology & Launches Investigation
The hospital has publicly apologised to patients who “received poor care.” It’s now probing 721 cases overseen by Jabbar in its orthopaedic department. GOSH is reaching out to families, offering support and addressing concerns about Jabbar’s practices.
Jabbar Banned from UK Medical Practice, Now in Dubai
Jabbar no longer holds a UK medical licence. He was struck off the General Medical Council’s register on January 8 this year. Prior to that, the GMC imposed conditions on him in early 2023. Meanwhile, he is reportedly working in Dubai.
Though Jabbar stopped working at GOSH in 2022, The Sunday Times revealed he only officially resigned in September 2023 after an 11-month sabbatical.
Patient Safety Concerns Mount as Families Demand Justice
This scandal raises huge alarm bells about safeguarding vulnerable children and hospital oversight. Families want answers and legal action is expected. GOSH promises transparency and support, but the full scale of the damage to these young patients is yet to be uncovered.
