RMT calls off November strikes, gears up for crunch talks with Network Rail
Strike Threats Suspended—For Now
Rail union RMT has pulled the plug on strikes planned for November 5, 7, and 9. Instead, they’re diving into intensive negotiations with Network Rail and train operators. It’s a sudden U-turn after a fired-up industrial campaign secured unconditional talks.
Train Firms Finally Feeling the Heat
Until now, train companies had refused to put any offers on the table. But the RMT’s hard-hitting pressure has forced them to promise one. Meanwhile, Network Rail had been pushing through maintenance changes without union agreement—sparking serious tension.
Dispute Still Far from Over
The row remains live, with the RMT conducting a fresh re-ballot of members for strike action. Results land on November 15, and union boss Mick Lynch warns the fight isn’t finished:
“The threat of strike action and our strongly supported industrial campaign has made the rail employers see sense.
We have always wanted to secure a negotiated settlement and that is what we will continue to push for in this next phase of intensive talks.
Our priority is our members, and we are working towards securing a deal on job security, a decent pay rise and good working conditions.
Our re-ballot remains live and if we have to take strike action during the next 6 months to secure a deal, we will.”
