King Charles III 5p Coins Hit UK Pockets – 23.2 Million Minted!

The Royal Mint is rolling out a colossal 23.2 million new 5p coins featuring King Charles III’s official portrait for the very first time. Minted in October 2023, these shiny new coins are hitting tills and wallets across the UK to keep up with huge demand.

Rare King Charles 5ps Now In Everyday Change

Collectors and the public alike can now hunt for these historic 5p coins in pocket change nationwide. Since the King’s portrait first appeared on UK coins in 2022, fans have been snapping up these prized pieces. But coins with His Majesty’s image still make up just 0.2% of the 24.6 billion coins swirling in circulation.

The reverse of the new 5p shows a stunning oak leaf design. This nod to the mighty oak symbolises the tree’s role in woodland biodiversity and echoes King Charles’s well-known passion for the environment and conservation.

Royal Mint Teams Up With Post Offices For Special Launch

Rebecca Morgan, Royal Mint’s commemorative coin director, said: “We are delighted to see His Majesty’s first 5p coins entering circulation following public demand. The oak leaf design beautifully represents the deep connection between our monarchy and the natural world, reflecting King Charles III’s lifelong dedication to environmental conservation.”

“These coins offer the public a wonderful opportunity to discover a piece of living history in their everyday change, and for many, finding one of these special coins could be the beginning of a fascinating journey into the world of coin collecting.”

It’s a rare makeover for the 5p coin — the first redesign since 2008. This means the new King Charles coins mark the first change to one of the UK’s smallest coins in 17 years.

The coins are available at post offices and bank branches across the UK. Special batches are even headed to post offices with “oak” in their name — like The Oaks in Dungannon and Jubilee Oak in Braintree — plus locations near famous trees across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

Russell Hancock, Post Office supply chain director, said: “We are incredibly proud to support the entry and circulation of this first 5p coin to bear His Majesty King Charles III’s official portrait.”
