Dangerous Cliff Selfies Spark Fury After Seaford Collapse

Coastguards have slammed reckless visitors risking life and limb for a photo on the edge of a cracked chalk cliff near Seaford, East Sussex. Just days after a huge chunk of the cliff gave way, thrill-seekers were caught posing perilously close to the unstable edge – ignoring clear safety warnings.

Warning Signs Ignored in Face of Imminent Collapse

Huge crack lines the cliff where parts could fall at any moment. HM Coastguard revealed a small crowd gathered nearby, gasping in disbelief as a brazen couple posed dangerously close to the brink. Extra signs and roped-off zones are up, but this spot was unprotected — making close calls even more risky.

“Please stay at least 5 metres away from the cliff’s edge,” urged HM Coastguard. “These cliffs are unstable and a collapse can happen without warning.”

Coastguards and Councillors Plead for Caution

East Sussex councillor Claire Dowling warned of hidden dangers lurking beneath the beauty: “The cliffs are prone to regular chalk falls. People must not underestimate the risks when standing on cliff tops or near the base.”

She also stressed the threat of incoming tides, advising visitors to check tide times before heading to the beach.

#BeCliffAware Campaign Battles Reckless Behaviour

The joint safety campaign by HM Coastguard, local councils, and conservation groups reminds visitors to:

  • Keep away from cliff edges
  • Stick to signposted paths
  • Observe local warning signs
  • Return before dark

Matt Pavitt, HM Coastguard’s South East area commander, said: “That perfect selfie isn’t worth risking your life. Cliff tops can crumble without warning and pull you down. If you see anyone in danger, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard immediately.”

Don’t gamble with death for a photo. Stay safe, stay back, and leave the cliff’s edge to the experts.
