Salisbury Faces Days of Disruption After Fisherton Tunnel Train Crash

Residents in Salisbury should brace for continued chaos until the weekend as investigations into Sunday’s (31 October) train crash at Fisherton Tunnel drag on. Emergency teams and specialist officers remain on site, combing the area for evidence before the wrecked carriages can be moved.

Road Closures and Pedestrian Bans Bring More Headaches

The A30 London Road, stretching from St Mark’s Avenue to Barrington Road, has been shut since the crash and will stay closed until the end of the week. From midday today, pedestrians will also be barred from this stretch to make way for cranes and heavy recovery vehicles accessing the scene, including a massive crane stationed near the local allotments.

Authorities say the area is too dangerous for foot traffic while the recovery operates at full swing. Officers will be out in force, engaging with locals, schools, and visitors to nearby cemeteries to explain the strict safety measures.

Noise and Train Delays to Add to Residents’ Woes

Expect noise disruption from 8am to 4pm daily as teams work hard amid limited daylight. Train services will likely remain affected beyond this week while engineers repair the damaged railway. Updates will be provided as soon as possible.

Officials Thank Salisbury for Patience as Complex Recovery Continues

Superintendent Chris Horton: “I’d like to pay a huge, heartfelt thank you to residents in the area for their patience and understanding while we continue with this phase of the operation. We fully understand the hindrance caused by this closure and, having considered all alternatives, have no other option available.

“Our teams and partners are working tirelessly to minimise disruption and restore full access as soon as possible. We currently expect the recovery to be complete by Sunday, but this is a highly complex operation and timelines may change. We will keep residents updated.”

Cllr Richard Clewer, Leader of Wiltshire Council: “I’d like to thank everyone in Salisbury and surrounding areas for their support during the ongoing closure of London Road, which has caused traffic headaches in the city.

“The on-site teams have done an excellent job under difficult circumstances, showing strong public sector coordination. Our thoughts are with those affected by the derailment, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.”

Mayor of Salisbury, Cllr Caroline Corbin: “Having witnessed the challenging site myself, I am very grateful to all those involved. Everyone is doing their best to keep disruption to a minimum. I want to thank Salisbury’s residents for their patience and send my thoughts to all affected by this incident.”
