Shock Transfer Request Rocks Isle of Wight ‘Wightlink’ Warriors
Speedway skipper Ben Hopwood has dropped a bombshell on the Wightlink Warriors by handing in a surprise transfer request. The Manchester-based rider’s new job means he can’t travel to the Island anymore, leaving the club scrambling to find a replacement.
Hopwood’s Move Catches Warriors Off Guard
Warriors co-promoter Barry Bishop admitted the news came out of nowhere. “Ben’s decision came out of the blue. He was always asking if his job was safe and seemed committed,” Bishop said.
But there’s more to the story. “We were disappointed to learn Ben was already in talks with the speedway authorities and at least one other club before telling us,” he added. Despite that, the club sends best wishes and insists there are no hard feelings. For now, Hopwood will ride for the Warriors for just 14 more days or until a replacement is found.
Essex Talent Alfie Bowtell Signed on the Spot
The Warriors acted fast, sealing the deal for Essex’s Alfie Bowtell to join the squad. The 21-year-old, with a solid 6.55 average, has raced alongside Ben Morley at Lakeside for two seasons and impressed on past visits to the Island.
Bishop said, “Alfie is an improving young rider who fits well and scores solidly. We’re excited to welcome him and back his development. His arrival also frees us up with the points limit, opening new options.”
New Line-up Takes on Plymouth
Bowtell makes his debut tomorrow night against Plymouth. The Warriors’ expected lineup includes Ben Morley, Danno Verge, Scott Campos, Chris Widman, Alfie Bowtell, Nick Laurence, and Shaun Tedham.
Plymouth face injury worries with Bradley Andrews sidelined and former Warriors captain James Cockle absent. Their team will likely be Richard Andrews, Henry Atkins, Macauley Leek, Adam Roynon, and Ryan Terry-Daley.
Wightlink Wizards Seek Revenge Against Exeter Falcons
After the Warriors, the Wightlink Wizards will battle Exeter Falcons in their first Southern Development League home match at Smallbrook Stadium. The Wizards lost by a narrow four points in Devon last Friday and are fired up for a comeback.
The team will feature Island riders Morgan Williams and James Luckman, along with birthday boy Chris Watts and stand-in captain Ben Ilsley, aiming to thrill home fans.
The action-packed night promises 21 races with no hike in admission prices. Gates swing open at 5.30pm, with the first race roaring off at 7.00pm. Don’t miss it!
