Wealden Council Rolls Out Tough Support Measures Amid Crisis
Wealden District Council is stepping up big time to back local communities through the tough times ahead. From cash handouts to safety nets, the council is pulling out all the stops to shield residents and businesses from financial fallout.
£150 Hardship Fund Boost for Thousands
Thousands of locals who already get council tax support have had a £150 credit added to their accounts, courtesy of the Government’s Hardship Fund. Council leader Bob Standley said:
“We appreciate the stress caused by financial hardship and worry. Our teams are working round the clock to get government support to those who really need it. We’ve already made solid progress.”
Businesses Get a Lifeline: Rates Suspended & Cash Grants Available
Local firms hit hard by the crisis aren’t being left to sink. Over 2,200 businesses will see their business rates scrapped for the year. Plus, eligible retail, hospitality and leisure outlets can claim grants of £10,000 or £25,000 to survive the storm.
Standley urges businesses to act fast:
“If you think you’re eligible, fill out the Covid-19 Business Support Grant Form on our website now. These measures aim to prevent closures and redundancies.”
Helping the Vulnerable & Community Volunteers Welcome
The council has launched a Community Hub to support vulnerable and self-isolating residents. Chief Exec Trevor Scott explained:
“This hub is a vital safety net for those without family or community help. We’ve seen fantastic efforts from local groups, but we want to make sure nobody falls through the cracks.”
If you’re over 70 or need assistance, contact Wealden on 01323 443322 or email [email protected]. Clinically extremely vulnerable folks not yet contacted should register via the Government website or call 0800 0288327.
The council is also calling for volunteers to help deliver supplies or simply chat to those feeling isolated. Details are on the Community Support page of their website.
Waste Collection & Staff Commendations
While garden waste collections are temporarily paused, refuse crews continue to operate under strict hygiene rules. Trevor Scott praised their dedication and reminded residents why changes are necessary during the pandemic.
Most council staff are working from home thanks to solid digital investments. Scott concluded:
“We salute all public sector workers battling this crisis. Together, from the NHS to local government, they’re holding communities up and we should be proud of their efforts.”
