Clwyd Cadets Celebrate Big Win at Lord-Lieutenant Awards

Ten local heroes, including eight star young cadets from Clwyd, have been honoured by the King’s representative for the county. The spotlight was on three cadets appointed as Lord-Lieutenant cadets for 2023, recognising their outstanding service and leadership.

Top Cadets Take Centre Stage

  • Cadet Sergeant Owen Brumby from St Brigid’s School Combined Cadet Force, Rhyl – former Cambrian Patrol team second-in-command and adventurous training enthusiast, with dreams of aerospace or automobile engineering.
  • Cadet Corporal Alun Hughes from No 2 Welsh Wing RAF Air Cadets, Dyserth – a supportive leader at 2193 (Prestatyn) Squadron, known for his confident leadership in drills and team challenges while studying at Llandrillo College.
  • Cadet Flight Sergeant Lewis Hughes from No 2 Welsh Wing RAF Air Cadets, Wrexham – a five-year veteran and role model at 1251 (Berwyn) Squadron, aspiring to be an RAF multi-engine pilot while attending Coleg Cambria.

The trio was officially appointed by Henry George Fetherstonhaugh OBE FRAgS, Lord-Lieutenant of Clwyd, at a ceremony held at Hightown Barracks, Wrexham, on 30 March. The one-year role will see them accompany the Lord-Lieutenant at key official events like Remembrance parades and Royal visits.

Honouring Cadet Tradition and Community Service

About 70 guests joined the celebration, marking not only the new cadet appointments but also recognising achievements across the reserves and cadet communities.

The new cadets follow in the footsteps of last year’s stars, including Cadet Sergeants Isabella Jones and Ciara Venables (Clwyd and Gwynedd Army Cadet Force), Maddie Bunn and Bethan Shutt (St Brigid’s), and Cadet Warrant Officer Kristian Harrison (RAF Air Cadets), all previous Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate holders.

Two adult volunteers also earned top honours for their dedication: Deborah Restall of Connah’s Quay Sea Cadet Corps and Chief Petty Officer Keith McDermott from Rhyl Sea Cadet Corps received the Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate of Merit.

Cadets: Wales’ Youth Powerhouse

Nearly 5,000 Welsh cadets sharpen skills and earn qualifications through community projects, charity work, and various practical activities. They are supported by 1,500 volunteer instructors who dedicate evenings and weekends to their training.

This high-profile awards event was hosted by the Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association (RFCA) for Wales, which has championed the Armed Forces for over a century.
