A249 Closed After Recycling Lorry Blaze in Kent
Vehicle Fire Sparks Major Road Closure
Emergency crews shut the A249 between Sittingbourne and the Isle of Sheppey after a recycling lorry erupted in flames early Tuesday.
At around 8.30am, four fire engines and a water carrier rushed to the scene between Bobbing and Iwade to tackle the heavy goods vehicle fire.
Firefighters Battle Blaze with Limited Water Supply
Fire crews, decked out in breathing gear, fought the fire using two hose reel jets. A water carrier was brought in due to scarce water supplies in the area.
The recycling lorry was unloaded in a nearby layby and soaked with water before the waste was transferred to a fresh roll on roll off skip.
Diggers Assist With Waste Removal as Traffic Chaos Builds
A digger was called in to help remove and reload the waste, but the A249 remains closed between Sittingbourne and Iwade.
Local diversion routes are causing slow-moving traffic, with delays stretching back to the M2 motorway.
Kent Fire and Rescue have been approached for comment.
