Newborn Family Missing After M61 Breakdown

Constance Marten, 35, her partner Mark Gordon, 48, and their newborn baby vanished after their car broke down near junction four of the M61 (Farnworth, Bolton) on Thursday, 5 January. Neither mother nor baby were checked by medical staff before they disappeared.

Last Seen in Essex – Police Launch Urgent Search

The couple were later spotted in Harwich and Colchester, Essex. On Saturday, 7 January, CCTV and taxi records showed they took a cab from Harwich to East Ham Station in Newham, London. This was their last confirmed sighting.

Essex Police initially led the search but handed it over to the Metropolitan Police on 12 January as the trail moved to London. Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford said:

“It’s been over a week since their car broke down. We’re deeply concerned for their wellbeing, especially the baby’s. New parents with a newborn should not be on the run like this.”

“Mark and Constance, please think of your baby’s health and get in touch. We want to make sure your child is safe and well. You’d never forgive yourself if something happened. We’re here to help.”

Strange Journey From M61 to London Raises Alarm

  • The family left their broken-down car on the motorway and walked to a nearby bridge.
  • Police believe they travelled from Greater Manchester to Liverpool, then to Harwich, before moving to London.
  • CCTV footage tracked them at East Ham Station between 11:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on 7 January.

Greater Manchester Police launched the missing persons probe after officers found the abandoned vehicle empty.

Police Appeal for Public Help

Detective Superintendent Basford added the investigation remains high priority. “Officers across the Met are urgently searching. Public sightings or information could be crucial.”
