Helicopters Scramble to Tackle Spreading Hankley Common Blaze
Chopper Missions Heat Up on Day Four
Yesterday, an Airbourne Solutions Eurocopter AS350 helicopter made multiple trips between Frensham Pond and Hankley Common to douse the advancing wildfire. The blaze has now scorched around 50 hectares of land after four relentless days.
Thankfully, no properties on or near the Ministry of Defence training area have been damaged so far.
Evacuations Lifted as Fire Crews Battle On
Residents evacuated earlier this week have returned to their homes, though the public is still advised to steer clear of Hankley Common while firefighting efforts continue.
Surrey Fire and Rescue has called in backup from Waverley Police, Ministry of Defence Police, and the Defence Infrastructure Organisation to tackle the inferno.
First-Ever Helicopter Water Bombing in Surrey
“This is the first time in Surrey that we have coordinated water bombing activities from a helicopter to support firefighting operations,” said Acting Chief Fire Officer Dan Quin.
“This extra muscle from us, the MOD, and Surrey Police should finally stop this wildfire. I’m incredibly proud of the crews battling harsh weather conditions to contain the fire.
Thanks to residents, farmers, and the Hankley Common Golf Club for their vital support.”
Road Closures Lifted, Residents Thanked for Patience
Inspector Sam Adcock, Borough Commander for Waverley, added: “We’ve been working alongside fire crews all week, including yesterday’s aerial firefighting exercises. Several road closures were necessary but are now lifted.”
“Huge thanks to Waverley residents for their patience through this disruption, and immense gratitude to Surrey Fire and Rescue for tirelessly keeping us safe.”
