Sunak Unveils New £238m Job Scheme to Get Pandemic Unemployed Back to Work
Chancellor Rishi Sunak today launched the Job Entry Targeted Support (JETS) scheme. This fresh initiative is designed to help Brits who lost their jobs during the pandemic get back on their feet fast.
Help for Those Out of Work 3 Months Plus
JETS targets people who have been unemployed for three months or more. It offers practical support from CV writing to interview coaching, all backed by a £238 million budget.
This sits alongside the massive £30 billion Plan for Jobs, which already includes:
- The Job Retention Bonus, encouraging companies to keep furloughed staff
- The Kickstart Scheme, subsidising jobs for 16-24-year-olds on Universal Credit
- Incentives for businesses to hire apprentices and trainees
- £900 million to double work coaches
- £32 million for the National Careers Service
MPs and Sunak Back the New Scheme
Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage praised the plan, saying:
“I know government support has been a lifeline for many of my constituents, with over 11,000 on furlough. Sadly, not every job can be protected as the pandemic continues. That’s why I’m pleased to see the new JETS scheme helping those now unemployed get back into work.”
Sunak added:
“Our unprecedented support has protected millions of jobs and businesses since the pandemic began. But I’ve always been clear we can’t save every job. Being out of work is damaging, but through JETS we will create fresh opportunities so nobody is left without hope.”
