Sunak Unveils JETS Scheme to Get Pandemic Jobless Back to Work
Chancellor Rishi Sunak today launched the Job Entry Targeted Support scheme (JETS), a fresh lifeline for workers who lost their jobs during the pandemic.
£238m Boost for the Long-Term Unemployed
The JETS scheme targets those out of work for three months or more. It offers hands-on help like CV writing and interview coaching, backed by a hefty £238 million fund.
This new initiative builds on the existing £30 billion Plan for Jobs. That includes efforts such as the Job Retention Bonus to keep furloughed staff, the Kickstart Scheme funding jobs for young Universal Credit claimants, and incentives for apprenticeships and traineeships.
So far, £900 million has been pumped into doubling work coaches, plus £32 million for the National Careers Service.
Local MP Praises the New Job Scheme
Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage welcomed the announcement, saying,
“I know government support has been a lifeline for many of my constituents, with over 11,000 on furlough.
“But sadly, not every job can be protected as we deal with the ongoing effects of the pandemic. That’s why I’m especially pleased to see the new JETS scheme helping those now unemployed get back into work.”
Sunak Vows Hope for Those Who’ve Lost Jobs
Rishi Sunak added,
“Our unprecedented support has protected millions of livelihoods and businesses since the start of the pandemic, but I’ve always been clear we can’t save every job.
“I’ve spoken about the damaging effects of being out of work, but through JETS we will provide fresh opportunities to those that have sadly lost their jobs, ensuring nobody is left without hope.”
