Deadly Boat Capsize on Lake Victoria Claims 20 Lives
A tragic disaster struck early Wednesday on Uganda’s Lake Victoria when an overloaded boat flipped, killing at least 20 people and leaving five missing. The vessel was loaded with charcoal, fresh foods, and fish, police revealed.
Overloading and Stormy Weather Blamed
The accident happened at 5 am amid harsh weather conditions. Officials say the boat was dangerously overloaded, carrying nine passengers who were rescued plus the missing individuals still being sought. Police are urging all water travellers to wear life jackets and avoid cramming vessels beyond capacity.
Lake Victoria: Africa’s Treacherous Water Giant
Spanning 70,000 sq km—roughly the size of Ireland—Lake Victoria borders Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. The sprawling lake has a dark history of boat disasters caused by overcrowding and unpredictable weather.
Past Catastrophes Haunt the Lake
- November 2018: A pleasure boat sank in bad weather, killing at least 32. Over 90 people were onboard.
- September 2018: The MV Nyerere ferry capsized on the Tanzanian side, resulting in hundreds of deaths.
Despite repeated warnings, tragedy continues to strike on Africa’s largest lake. Authorities now face the grim task of searching for the missing and preventing further loss of life on these dangerous waters.
