Tragedy Strikes Guatemala City as Floods Sweep Away Homes

At least 18 people, including ten children, have vanished after relentless rains sent a sewage-filled river roaring through fragile homes in Guatemala’s capital. The disaster unfolded on Monday, leaving the community reeling in shock and grief.

Sewage River Surge Wrecks Vulnerable Settlement

A swollen tributary of the Las Vacas river unleashed floodwaters that swallowed six shanty homes under a bridge in central Guatemala City. Conred disaster agency spokesperson Rodolfo Garcia revealed that despite a city ban, hundreds of desperately poor families lived in makeshift zinc-sheet houses along this toxic tributary, polluted with residential wastewater.

After heavy rain on Sunday, the torrent carried stones, soil, and human waste, obliterating the settlement. An AFP reporter described the scene as total destruction, with nothing left but debris.

Search and Rescue Underway as Families Wait in Despair

Conred launched urgent search and rescue efforts for the missing and began assessing the community’s dire needs. The atmosphere remains tense as relatives cling to hope for news of loved ones lost in the deluge.

Local resident Esau Gonzalez, 42, described the horror: “The river took homes, neighbours’ belongings. Neighbours disappeared.” He highlighted the grim reality that forced people to build homes in such deadly spots.

Motorcycle courier Marvin Cabrera, 36, echoed the sentiment: “We knew the risk, but we are here out of necessity. The river took entire families.”

Guatemala’s Housing Crisis Fuels Disaster Risk

Guatemala faces a massive housing crisis. With a population of 17.7 million, tens of thousands live in precarious structures in high-risk areas. Poverty plagues 59% of the country, leaving families no choice but to settle where they can.

Industry experts estimate a housing deficit of around two million units. The Guatemalan Chamber of Construction and builders’ association ANACOVI warn this urgent shortfall must be tackled to prevent future tragedies.
