Two Kids Under 10 Dead Amid Surge in Strep Infections

Public Health Scotland has revealed a grim toll: two children under ten died between October and December due to Group A strep infections.

Strep Cases Stay High but Are Dropping

The latest week ending December 25 saw 670 reports of upper respiratory infections, down from 870 the previous week. However, these figures still dwarf past peak weeks, which typically had 160-270 reports.

Health Chief Urges Caution and Hygiene

“While we are seeing increased incidence of Group A strep infections at this time, complications are rare,” said Dr Jim McMenamin, Head of Health Protection at Public Health Scotland.

“We encourage parents and care-givers to practise good hand and respiratory hygiene to curb the spread of infections,” he added.

“If your child shows signs of scarlet fever, seek medical advice immediately. Most cases respond quickly to early treatment with antibiotics.”

What to Look Out For

  • Symptoms of scarlet fever include a red rash, sore throat, fever, and flushed face.
  • Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent serious complications.
  • Good hygiene remains the best defence against these infections.
