Kent Flood Chaos: Police Urge Drivers to Stay Off the Roads!
Kent Police have slammed drivers for ignoring warnings as floodwaters swamp roads across the county. With some streets under more than a foot of water, emergency services are begging people not to travel unless absolutely necessary.
“We’ve had countless calls about stranded cars and impassable roads,” police said. “Please don’t make it worse. Stay home and stay safe.”
Flood Havoc Hits M20 and Beyond
The M20 between Junctions 1 and 2 is a nightmare zone after the River Darent burst its banks, flooding all three lanes. Despite repeated warnings, drivers are still barreling through the deluge, putting themselves and emergency crews at risk.
Kent Fire and Rescue Service have confirmed they will not always respond immediately to flooding calls unless a life is at risk. An officer will first assess the scene before sending backup, due to the sheer volume of emergency calls.
“We can only pump out floodwater if there is a significant amount and if it won’t cause problems elsewhere,” said KFRS. “Please think before you dial 999.”
Stay Safe: Don’t Drive or Walk Through Floods
- Never drive through flooded roads or fords — water depth is deceptive and currents can sweep vehicles away.
- Heed road closure signs; they exist to protect you.
- If visibility worsens in heavy rain, pull over safely until it improves.
- Roads are slippery, so take extra care or avoid travel altogether.
- Don’t walk through floodwaters — even shallow rushing water can knock you down or hide dangerous hazards like open drains and broken surfaces.
- Call 999 only if there’s immediate danger to life or serious property damage.
- If your home floods, switch off your electricity supply promptly.
- Keep an eye on local weather reports and Floodline at 0345 988 1188.
- Look out for vulnerable neighbours, especially the elderly, who can suffer hypothermia even in summer floods.
- Report sewage leaks to your water company immediately.
After the Flood: Essential Tips for Your Property
- Contact your insurance company ASAP and document damage with photographs.
- Wear waterproof gear, gloves, and wellies to protect against contamination.
- Have electrical systems checked by a certified engineer before use.
- Get gas or oil heating systems inspected by qualified professionals.
- Contact your local council for help with clearing flood-damaged items and possible sandbag support.
Stay tuned and stay safe, Kent – the River Darent in Otford has breached its banks and the water levels aren’t dropping anytime soon.
