UBS to Pay £1.1bn Over 2008 Financial Crisis Fraud Claims
Swiss banking giant UBS has agreed to cough up $1.4 billion (£1.1 billion) to settle claims tied to dodgy mortgage deals from the 2008 crash. US prosecutors accused UBS of misleading investors about mortgage-backed securities sold in 2006-2007.
The bank neither admitted nor denied the allegations but accepted the hefty payout to close US civil claims tied to the financial meltdown. Earlier, UBS tried to get the case thrown out, insisting no proof of intentional fraud existed.
Ryan K Buchanan, US Attorney for Northern Georgia, blasted UBS’s role: “Their actions helped fuel the worst financial crisis in a generation, wreaking havoc on millions of Americans.”
