Drivers in Uxbridge, Greenford, Hayes, Pinner, and Southall are being warned about a rising wave of “Clip for Cash” scams hitting West London streets. Fraudsters are striking by throwing rocks at parked cars, then accusing victims of wing mirror damage and demanding hundreds in cold cash on the spot.

How The “Clip for Cash” Scam Works

  • Scammers park on the left side of quiet residential roads.
  • As drivers pass slowly, the crooks hurl objects like rocks to make a loud impact.
  • They flash lights or tail the vehicle, forcing drivers to stop.
  • The fraudsters claim the victim clipped their wing mirror, demanding up to £500 immediately.
  • If drivers refuse, the scammers may resort to threats or intimidation.

West London Hit Hard – Dozens of Cases Reported

The Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB) has confirmed at least a dozen scam reports in the UB postcode recently. Similar schemes have cropped up across London, the South West, and Wales, putting drivers nationwide on alert.

“These fraudsters trick innocent motorists into thinking they’ve caused genuine damage,” said Nicola Smith, Intelligence and Investigations Manager at IFB. “It’s an increasing threat, especially as offenders are turning to threatening behaviour. We’re urging everyone to be alert to the warning signs and avoid handing over cash.”

What To Do If You’re Targeted

  • Do NOT hand over money.
  • Stay calm and remain in your vehicle if safe.
  • Call the police immediately, especially if threatened.
  • Report the scam to the IFB Cheatline on 0800 422 0421 or online anonymously.

Police and authorities are investigating the sharp rise in “Clip for Cash” scams and urge locals to spread the word. Stay sharp, West London—don’t fall for the racket!
