West Sussex firefighters warn: Stay safe with winter heating or face disaster!
Cold Snap Sparks Fire Danger
As temperatures plunge and heating bills soar, West Sussex residents are turning to open fires, electric blankets, portable heaters, and wheat bags to keep warm. But fire chiefs warn these alternatives come with serious risks.
Firefighters report an alarming rise in home fire hazards during the freezing spell. A recent chimney fire in Midhurst burned inside a wall cavity unnoticed for days, only stopped thanks to a working smoke detector.
Fire Chief Sounds the Alarm
Chris Bowles, Station Manager at Worthing Fire Station, said: “With the cold bites below freezing, fire risks at home have shot up. We don’t want to stop anyone using these heating methods, but it’s vital to know the dangers and how to avoid fires.”
“I urge everyone to use our online home fire safety check tool to spot hazards and reduce risk.”
He added: “Make sure you have working smoke alarms on every floor – it could save your life.”
Stay Safe This Winter
- Keep open fires clear of flammable materials.
- Never leave electric blankets or portable heaters unattended.
- Regularly check and clean chimneys and flues.
