Deadly Wildfires Ravage Southeastern Turkey

At least 11 people have died and dozens more injured as fierce wildfires tore through villages in southeastern Turkey. The blaze primarily hit the Kurdish region between Diyarbakir and Mardin, leaving devastation in its wake.

Blaze Rips Through Villages

The fire started from burning crop stubble but quickly spiralled out of control with strong winds fanning the flames. It engulfed the villages of Koksalan, Yazcicegi, and Bagacik, lighting up the night sky with thick smoke pouring into the air. Social media was flooded with dramatic images of the inferno.

Emergency Crews Struggle to Contain Fire

Emergency teams and ambulances raced to the scene, battling to control the disaster. By Friday, firefighters had managed to contain the blaze, but not before it claimed lives and caused severe damage.

Government Criticised as Investigation Launched

The pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM) slammed the government for a “late and insufficient” response. They called for urgent deployment of water bombers, warning that ground efforts alone were failing.

Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc confirmed the public prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the fire’s cause.

Additional Wildfires Strike Northwestern Turkey

Meanwhile, near Ayvacik in Canakkale province, firefighters fought another wildfire. No injuries were reported, but authorities evacuated the village of Camkoy as a precaution. This fire is part of a series of wildfires raging across Canakkale, spurred by high winds and scorching temperatures.

Turkey’s Wildfire Crisis Worsens

So far this year, Turkey has battled 74 wildfires, destroying nearly 13,000 hectares (31,900 acres) of land, according to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS). The ongoing blazes highlight the country’s escalating wildfire emergency amid a brutal summer.
