Mass Petition Slams Labour’s Winter Fuel Payment Cut
A whopping 260,000 people have signed a petition demanding the Labour government reverse its controversial Winter Fuel Payment changes. The move has sparked outrage among pensioners and campaigners worried about cold, unaffordable winters ahead.
Winter Fuel Payments Slashed to Means-Tested Only
Until now, all over-state-pension-age Brits got a Winter Fuel Payment to help cover heating costs. But Chancellor Rachel Reeves has slammed the brakes, announcing only pensioners on means-tested benefits like Pension Credit will qualify in England and Wales from this winter.
The payments, worth up to £300 depending on circumstances, will now miss millions of struggling pensioners who don’t receive these benefits — leaving them out in the cold.
Charities Warn of a Harsh Chill for the Elderly
Age UK warns this cruel policy could hit 2 million pensioners hard — especially those just missing out on Pension Credit or with high energy needs due to disability or illness. Their petition states:
“Cutting the Winter Fuel Payment this winter, with virtually no notice and no help for poor, vulnerable pensioners, is the wrong policy. Millions rely on this £300 to pay bills and stay warm.”
Who Qualifies Now – And What Scotland Is Doing Differently
The new rules mean you must have been born before September 23, 1958, and be claiming one of these benefits between September 16-22, 2024:
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Pension Credit
- Universal Credit
Meanwhile, Scotland’s government has pledged a fresh winter Heating Payment for ALL over-pension-age residents — no means test required. Northern Ireland hasn’t yet revealed its plans.
Government Stands Firm, But Pensions Groups Aren’t Backing Down
A government spokesperson defended the move, saying:
“This government is committed to pensioners: protecting the triple lock, lowering energy bills, and reducing NHS waiting lists. Given the dire public finances, targeting Winter Fuel Payments to those in greatest need is the right decision. We’ll also boost Pension Credit uptake to help eligible pensioners.”
But with the petition still growing, pensioners and groups vow to fight for the right of all elderly Brits to stay warm this winter.
