Woman Found in River Mersey Finally Identified as Laura Stanley
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have confirmed the woman found in the River Mersey last March is 38-year-old Laura Stanley. Originally from Derbyshire, Laura lived in Stockport before her tragic death.
Year-Long Hunt Yields Breakthrough
Laura’s body was discovered on 21 March 2024 near Chorlton Water Park. GMP’s Major Incident Team launched an extensive investigation, combing through national and international databases. Experts helped create a facial reconstruction to identify her.
Public appeals sparked dozens of tips, leading to a breakthrough. A relative recognised the image and contacted police. DNA tests confirmed Laura’s identity.
“For the last twelve months, the investigation team have worked meticulously on this case, demonstrating commitment and dedication to giving Laura her identity back and reuniting her with her family and loved ones.”
– Detective Inspector Louise Edwards, GMP
Heartfelt Family Tribute
Laura’s family paid tribute to her warm and adventurous spirit:
“Laura was a kind and gentle person with a great sense of fun and adventure. She was generous, thoughtful, caring, and always keen to volunteer within the community. Laura was a proud and loving mum, and she will be greatly missed by her girls and all of her friends and family who loved her dearly.”
The family has asked for privacy during this difficult time.
Investigation Continues as Police Probe Circumstances
Police are still looking into Laura’s final movements and how she ended up in the river. She was last seen around January 2024. GMP is also reviewing a past missing person report through their Professional Standards Directorate to determine if proper steps were taken.
