Coronation Street star John Saint Ryan has died aged 72 after suffering a heart attack. His wife Joyce broke the sad news, sharing a heartfelt tribute to her late husband’s life and legacy.
Family Heartbreak
Joyce revealed on social media:
“I and our family want to let our friends know that John had a heart attack on the evening of Thursday 3rd April. We were with him at the hospital where the staff did everything possible, but unfortunately, he did not survive. We are absolutely heartbroken.”
John had chosen to donate his body to medical research, so there will be no funeral. Instead, the family plans to hold a celebration of his life at a later date.
“We are all fortunate to have known and loved this special ‘Gentleman’ as he has been described to me numerous times over the last couple of days,” Joyce added.
From Martial Arts to the Weatherfield Streets
Born in Burnley, Lancashire, in 1953, John Saint Ryan began his career as a martial arts teacher. He broke into acting as a stunt double for Sean Connery in The Medicine Man, before landing a role in Channel 4’s G.B.H. in 1983.
He appeared in Emmerdale before his best-known part as Charlie Whelan, a long-distance lorry driver on Coronation Street from 1993 to 1994. His character’s romance with Rovers Return landlady Bet Gilroy (Julie Goodyear) was a highlight—until barmaid Tanya Pooley (Eva Pope) whisked Charlie away to Germany, only to ditch him later. That was the end of his Weatherfield story.
Hollywood Guest Spots and A Life With Horses
After Corrie, John moved to California. There, he guest-starred in US TV hits like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Babylon 5, Gargoyles, and L.A. Heat. He also starred in several indie films.
Off-screen, John was a passionate horse trainer who ran the Red Rose Ranch in California. He specialised in the doma vaquera style of riding, winning multiple national and international titles. He trained horses and riders in dressage and western riding, combining his love for the equestrian world with his competitive spirit.
Tributes Pour In
Fans and fellow actors flooded social media with loving memories:
- “A true gentleman on and off the screen. Rest in peace, John. Your talent and kindness will be missed.”
- “Loved his character on Corrie. Such a versatile actor. Saddened to hear of his passing.”
Julie Goodyear, who played Bet Gilroy, paid her respects, calling John “a kind soul with a passion for life and acting.”
