The star-studded event celebrating fan-favourite TV and film hits was scrapped at the last minute thanks to a major writers’ strike rocking Hollywood.
Writers Walk Out, Awards Show Axed
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) launched their strike last week, with 11,500 writers downing pens after their contracts expired. They’re fighting for a bigger payday, more writers on each show, and fewer restrictions tying them to single projects—demands spurred by the streaming boom reshaping the industry.
Stars Rally Behind Striking Writers
Despite the chaos, stars like Jennifer Coolidge, Pedro Pascal, and Joseph Quinn made sure to salute the writers during pre-recorded acceptance speeches. Coolidge, who scooped the comedic genius prize for “White Lotus,” declared she stood “side by side” with those striking, praising “the rights of artists everywhere” and saying, “almost all great comedy starts with great writers.”
Pedro Pascal, holding three golden popcorn trophies for “The Mandalorian” and delivering Best Hero and Best Duo wins, emphasised solidarity. “We are all … standing in solidarity with the WGA that is fighting very hard for fair wages. We thank you, we 1 you,” he said.
Breakthrough star Joseph Quinn also paid tribute to the strikers, acknowledging their crucial role in entertainment’s success.
Strike Halts Hit Shows and Live Glamour
The WGA planned to picket at the glitzy event in Santa Monica, California, where the red carpet and live show were ultimately cancelled. This strike, the first in 15 years, has brought production to a standstill on top shows like “The Morning Show,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and the upcoming “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.”
Negotiations with producers’ body AMPTP are ongoing, with talks expected to resume any day now.
