Palestinian Man Shot Dead in Dawn Raid on Tulkarem Camp

A deadly clash between Israeli forces and Palestinians has flared tensions once again in the occupied West Bank. Mahmoud Jarad, 23, was fatally shot during an early morning Israeli military raid on the Tulkarem refugee camp, according to Palestinian news agency Wafa.

Live Ammo, Tear Gas, and Snipers in Raid

Israeli soldiers stormed the northern West Bank camp, firing live ammunition and tear gas. Witnesses reported snipers stationed on residential rooftops. Jarad was struck in the chest and rushed to Thabet Thabet Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Hospital director Amin Khader told Palestine TV that eight other Palestinians were injured in the violent confrontations.

Fatah Denies Militancy, Islamic Jihad Claims Fighting Back

The Fatah party confirmed Jarad was one of their members but insisted he was not involved in militant activities. Meanwhile, the Tulkarem Brigade – the armed wing of Palestinian Islamic Jihad – claimed they fought back with gunfire and improvised explosives during the incursion.

Violence Escalates Amid Longstanding Conflict

The Palestinian health ministry and Israeli military have yet to comment on the incident, which highlights the fragile and volatile situation in the West Bank. Just a day earlier, Israeli forces killed a Palestinian fighter wanted by the army near Nablus.

Hostilities have surged in the past 15 months amid intensified Israeli raids, settler provocations, and Palestinian street attacks. The UN reports at least 196 Palestinians and 24 Israelis have died since January alone, while Palestinian sources say this year’s death toll has already topped 220.

Deep-Rooted Strife With No End in Sight

The West Bank remains a powder keg, with Israel’s military occupation dating back to 1967 and ongoing settlement expansion condemned by much of the international community.

Peace talks, including US-led efforts for a two-state solution, collapsed in 2014 and no negotiations have resumed since.

The Tulkarem area houses roughly 40,700 Palestinian refugees registered with the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), living in camps established decades ago for families displaced during Israel’s creation in 1948.

This latest violence underscores the urgent need for renewed dialogue and a peaceful resolution in this troubled region.
