Liverpool Football Club has secured the signature of midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai from Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig for a reported fee of 70 million euros (£60 million). The Hungarian international has signed a five-year contract with the Reds, becoming their second major signing of the summer transfer window.
Liverpool exercised Szoboszlai’s release clause to finalize the deal, following their earlier acquisition of Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton for £35 million. The 22-year-old Szoboszlai, pending the completion of a work permit, expressed his delight at joining the historic club, praising the quality of players and the coaching staff.
“It’s a really historic club, really good players, good coach. For me, it was perfect to make the next step in a club like this. The fans, the stadium, everything is really good,” said Szoboszlai.
Having won the German Cup in the last two seasons, Szoboszlai brings valuable experience to Liverpool’s midfield. In the previous Bundesliga campaign, he made 31 appearances, scoring six goals and providing eight assists. Since his move from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2021, Szoboszlai has amassed an impressive record of 20 goals and 21 assists in 91 appearances.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, aiming to reinforce the midfield following the departures of James Milner, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, expressed his excitement about the signing. Klopp highlighted Szoboszlai’s potential, citing the challenges he posed when playing against Liverpool in the Champions League while representing RB Salzburg.
“We already have a little knowledge of Dominik as an opponent because we had a couple of really tough games against RB Salzburg when he was a player there, and I think everyone who saw those fixtures will have realized that even at that stage he was a really interesting prospect,” said Klopp.
The German manager praised Szoboszlai’s development since those encounters, commending his performances in the Bundesliga, his contributions to the Hungarian national team, and his appointment as captain at a young age.
“This is a signing for our present and also for our future, and the work that has gone into it could not be more appreciated,” added Klopp.
