UK Boosts Moldova and Georgia with Fresh Cash to Fend Off Russian Threats
Foreign Secretary James Cleverly heads to Moldova and Georgia this week armed with a hefty cash injection to toughen up the region against Russia’s sneaky meddling. London is pouring millions into these vulnerable neighbours, battling the fallout from Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine.
£10 Million Extra for Moldova’s Reforms
On his visit from March 16-17, Cleverly will unveil an additional £10 million to back economic and governance reforms in Moldova, focusing on energy and fighting corruption. This tops up the £12 million already pumped in to boost transparency and anti-corruption efforts.
- Funds also target cyber defences and counter disinformation campaigns.
- Support includes £10 million for UN agencies helping Ukrainian refugees and their Moldovan hosts.
Securing Georgia’s 2024 Vote
In Georgia, Cleverly will spotlight UK aid combating Russian subversion through defence and cyber cooperation. The UK is also pledging £500,000 to ensure next year’s elections are free and fair, keeping Kremlin interference at bay.
Cleverly’s Firm Stand Against Russian Aggression
“Few societies understand the underhand tactics of Russian malign activity more than Moldova and Georgia,” Cleverly said.
“The UK will not stand idly by while Moscow blatantly undermines their democracy, sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
“We must reinforce their resilience to Russia’s hybrid threats, safeguard the democratic choices of their people and protect them from the threat on their doorstep.”
Both countries face a tough fight against Kremlin-backed aggression and Kremlin control attempts. Cleverly’s visit signals the UK’s unwavering commitment to defending their freedom and sovereignty.
