TRA Cracks Down on Cheap Chinese Steel Ropes in New Review
The Trade Remedies Authority (TRA) launched a major transition review today, 30 March 2023, targeting anti-dumping measures on steel ropes and cables from China. The probe also covers products shipped via Morocco and Korea.
What’s Under Fire?
The review zeroes in on steel ropes and cables, including locked coil types — but excludes stainless steel versions. These crucial components are widely used in construction, oil and gas, and the making of cranes, bridges, and household appliances.
Imports on the Rise, Prices Falling
Between 2019 and 2022, the UK saw a surge in steel wire rope imports. Meanwhile, the average price of Chinese imports took a nosedive throughout 2022, raising eyebrows in the UK steel industry.
TRA’s Scope and How to Take Part
- The TRA will investigate UK production and import levels from China, Morocco, and Korea.
- The review covers 1 January to 31 December 2022 for trade volumes, and injury assessments stretch back to 2019.
- Businesses affected — importers, exporters, or UK producers — must register their interest on the TRA’s online case platform by 17 April 2023.
