Why Road Safety Education Matters

Every year, 17,000 UK children suffer injuries from road accidents, with around 2,000 facing life-changing harm or death. Southampton’s event aims to inspire the next generation of road heroes by educating families on the serious risks on our roads.

“Education work is vital in preventing road traffic incidents and the devastating consequences they have on families. I can think of no better way to get the message across than getting local heroes in emergency response teams to teach children and adults how to stay safe in a fun, accessible way.” — Dr Bob Coates, Interim Director of Public Health, Southampton City Council

“Everyday children and young people across Hampshire get seriously injured or killed in road traffic collisions. While we are experts in rescuing casualties, we’re passionate about prevention and promoting safer road users.” — Louise Kovacs, CYP Education and Safer Roads Manager, Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service

“This will be a valuable event which is enjoyable to all the family. We all need to be safe on the road and this is a perfect opportunity to understand why and what we can all do to be safe.” — Rob Heard, Road Safety Sergeant, Hampshire Constabulary

Whether you’re a pedestrian, cyclist, driver, or passenger, Southampton’s family road safety day is a fantastic way to learn, have fun, and keep safe on the roads. Don’t miss it!
