Local Golf Society Raise 15K for QA Portsmouth Hospital

The Golf Preservation Society (GPS), based at East Horton Golf Club in Fair Oak, have raised an amazing £15,000 for the purchase of important medical equipment and to renovate a family quiet room within the Head and Neck Department at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham. The society who choose to fundraise for a different cause each year, have raised the funds by taking part in and hosting a variety of events throughout the year of 2015. Founding GPS member Steve Alexander and Club Captain Malcolm Jenvey created a committee and led the way in fundraising by proceeding to put in place a number of different fundraising activities for their society to take part in. This included charity quiz nights, golf challenges, a darts marathon, the 3 peaks challenge, a Snowdon cycle, kayaking the Solent, a charity BBQ and finally a charity golf day and dinner. Once the funds were raised, the committee worked with staff at QA Hospital to purchase 5 suction units, 30 nebulisers, 6 servox, 20 boogie boards, 3 wheel chairs and 2 high low couches. There are also plans in 2016 for the society to renovate the Head and Neck Quiet Room, which is used to comfort family members of patients being treated within the department. Vanessa Young, Macmillan Senior Head and Neck Clinical Nurse Specialist at QA said, “Our Department is hugely grateful to the Golf Preservation Society for raising such an incredible amount of money. The equipment purchased will make a huge difference to the patients being treated within the Department.”
