Chaos on the M4: Lorry Overturns and Spills Bleach, Diesel Near Reading
Motorists face major delays on the M4 this morning after a 42-tonne lorry flipped onto its side near Reading services, spilling bleach and diesel across the London-bound carriageway.
Two Lanes Shut, Long Delays Expected
The crash happened at around 4:45am on Friday, November 4, between junction 12 (Theale) and junction 11 (Reading). The hard shoulder and lanes one and two remain closed as crews tackle the huge clean-up operation.
Highways England warns the closures could last for several hours, with delays now up to 40 minutes. They are working to right the lorry and clear the dangerous spillage.
Driver Escapes Unhurt Despite Dramatic Flip
Emergency services rushed to the scene after the lorry partially slipped down a bank and overturned. Firewatch manager Mark Jones from Dee Road fire station said: “It had overturned so it was partially blocking the road.
The lorry spilled domestic bleach, comfort drain unblocker, and diesel, creating a hazardous mess. Firefighters worked quickly to contain the chemicals and make the area safe.
Detours in Place – Avoid the Area!
Highways England has put in place a signed diversion route. Eastbound traffic is advised to follow the Hollow Circle diversion:
- Exit M4 at Junction 12 and take the first exit onto the A4
- Follow the A4 to the A4155 and turn right to remain on the A4
- Turn right onto the A33 southbound and rejoin the M4 at Junction 11
Thames Valley Police urge drivers to avoid the area where possible as the cleanup continues, with the road expected to remain closed until at least 4pm.
