Portsmouth Council’s Stray Dog Kennels Snag Gold Award from RSPCA

Portsmouth City Council’s stray dog kennels have bagged a prestigious gold award from the RSPCA. The accolade, part of the Community Animal Welfare Footprints (CAWF) scheme, rewards those who go the extra mile in animal care beyond legal requirements.

Top-Notch Care and Services Earn Gold

The kennels earned the gold Stray Dog Footprint award by offering extra services like out-of-hours support and micro-chipping. They also champion responsible pet ownership through ongoing community efforts.

Council leader Donna Jones accepted the award at a swanky ceremony in London’s Parliament Square. She was joined by Cabinet Member Robert New, kennels manager Roy Goulding, and lead assistant Carol Plumbly.

Council Praises Team’s Dedication to Dogs

Cllr Robert New said: “I’m very proud that the kennels team have won this award, recognising their hard work and the highest standards.

They go beyond the call of duty, caring for strays and abandoned dogs, many of whom have been mistreated. They’re committed to reuniting dogs with their owners or finding them loving new homes.

Sadly, many pups are dumped after Christmas, bought as gifts then abandoned when owners find them too much hassle. People must remember: a dog is for life, not just for Christmas.”

RSPCA Hails Portsmouth’s Efforts

Rachel Williams, senior parliamentary advisor for the RSPCA, added: “Receiving a CAWF award is a major achievement.

The Footprints are the only awards recognising the hard graft of local authorities and public bodies in boosting animal welfare. It’s fantastic to celebrate organisations like Portsmouth Council making a real difference.”
