Serious Crash Closes Major Southampton Road – Pedestrian Hospitalised

Police shut both lanes of The Avenue in Southampton after a serious collision last Thursday night. A pedestrian was hit by a black Mercedes CLK 220 Avantgarde near the junction with Westwood Road around 10.55pm.

The Avenue Sealed Off Until Dawn

Officers closed the road between Winn Road and Westwood Road just before 11pm. The closure lasted until at least 4am as collision investigators combed the scene. Drivers were urged to avoid the area with local diversions in place.

Emergency Response and Arrest

Armed response officers were on hand immediately, providing first aid to the seriously injured man before paramedics arrived. The victim, a 27-year-old male, was rushed to Southampton General Hospital with dangerous head and back injuries.

A South Central Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed two ambulance crews, rapid response, and air ambulance staff attended the scene. The Mercedes driver, who escaped unhurt but treated for shock, was arrested following police questioning.

Eyewitness Account and Impact on Traffic

A passenger on a nearby Unilink bus, trapped by the closure, said the man was trying to cross The Avenue when the Mercedes struck him, knocking him onto the road.

The driver remains in custody as police continue their investigation. Local bus routes and road traffic were heavily affected during the closure.

Police Appeal for Witnesses

Anyone who saw the collision is urged to contact Totton Roads Police on 101 with any information.
