Bank Holiday Danger: Kent Fire Warns Public to Steer Clear of Yalding Weir
With the late May bank holiday fast approaching, Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) is sounding the alarm about the deadly risks at Yalding weir in Maidstone. This popular spot has become a nightmare for water rescues, after a recent scare where a group of children were almost swept away when the sluice gates suddenly opened – turning calm, shallow waters into a ferocious torrent in seconds.
Hidden Peril Beneath Calm Waters
Many will flock to Yalding’s scenic surrounds this holiday, but KFRS isn’t taking chances. They’ve released a gripping video showing just how dangerous the water can get, and how quickly. Water safety instructor Chris Kendall, decked out in full rescue kit, wades through knee-deep, peaceful water.
Suddenly, the sluice gates blast open and the torrent erupts. Despite his expert training and protective gear, Chris is immediately swept off his feet and dragged downstream. At peak flow, a staggering 10 tonnes of water barrel through the gates every second.
Expert’s Stark Warning: Not a Pool, It’s a Death Trap
“Even with all my training and skills in water, I couldn’t stay on my feet when the sluice gates opened,” said Chris. “The water hit me with quite a force and became much deeper very quickly. I don’t think many people, especially children, would be able to save themselves in those conditions.”
Chris added that without his personal floatation device and knowledge of currents, he likely would’ve been dragged under or down a deadly path. “My advice to anyone thinking of entering the water at Yalding weir this bank holiday, or any time, is simple: don’t risk it and stay out — it’s not a swimming pool.”
Stay Safe This Bank Holiday

- Beware sudden sluice gate openings.
- Respect water warnings and signage.
- Keep children safe and away from the weir.
Remember – one moment of fun isn’t worth a lifetime of tragedy. Stay safe and enjoy the bank holiday on dry land.
