Drama at Island Learning Centre as Pupil Smashes Windows and Strands on Roof

Emergency services rushed to the Island Learning Centre on Albany Road in Newport just before 4pm today after a pupil climbed onto the roof and smashed windows.

Standoff on the Roof

The youngster refused to come down, prompting police from Hampshire Constabulary and the Isle of Wight Fire Service to respond. Crews set up a cordon around the school, closing the road in both directions. Firefighters used a short extension ladder to reach the distressed pupil.

By 4.15pm, a firefighter had climbed onto the roof to talk the student down.

Safe Resolution After Tense Wait

At 5.05pm, the student was safely brought down after a calm conversation with the incident commander. The school is handling the situation as an internal matter. Thankfully, the pupil was not injured during the ordeal.

Background on the Island Learning Centre

The Island Learning Centre offers specialised support for the Isle of Wight’s most vulnerable students. It recently moved to Albany Road following a fire that destroyed its previous building in Lake.
