Bembridge Lifeboat Rescues Motor Cruiser Run Aground Near Harbour
24ft Cruiser Stuck at Harbour Entrance
Bembridge RNLI’s inshore lifeboat sprang into action on Wednesday evening after a 24ft motor cruiser ran aground near Bembridge Harbour. The boat, carrying two people, reported a fouled prop at around 7:30pm close to the harbour entrance.
Switch to Smaller Lifeboat for Shallow Waters
Initially, the UK Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the larger all-weather lifeboat, RNLB Alfred Albert Williams. However, officials quickly switched to the smaller RNLB Norman Harvey when it became clear the deeper draught of the big boat couldn’t safely navigate the shallow entrance channel.
Rescue Mission: A Nudge and a Helping Hand
The Norman Harvey reached the stranded cruiser just south of No 4 buoy. The issue? The cruiser had run aground. A crew member hopped aboard to help steer, while the lifeboat gave the motor boat a gentle push. Thanks to the incoming tide, the cruiser managed to free itself and safely made its way into Bembridge Harbour.
Quick Return After Successful Rescue
After escorting the cruiser to safety, the Norman Harvey headed back to Lane End and was recovered by 8:30pm, wrapping up a smooth and efficient rescue.
